Douglass North
North diterima di Harvard University, tetapi karena ayahnya menjadi kepala MetLife di pantai barat, maka North pun memilih untuk mengambil studi di Universitas California, Berkeley. Pada tahun 1942 dia memperoleh gelar sarjana dalam kurikulum Humaniora dan kemudian berhasil menyelesaikan ilmu pengetahuan politik, filsafat dan ekonomi.
Pada tahun 1992, dia menjadi sejarawan ekonomi pertama yang memenangkan penghargaan paling populer di bidang ekonomi.
Penelitiannya saat ini meliputi hak kepemilikan, biaya transaksi, dan organisasi ekonomi dalam sejarah sebagaimana perkembangan ekonomi di negara berkembang.
North hingga saat ini mengajar di Washington University di St Louis dan merupakan Bartlett Burnap Senior Fellow di Hoover Institution di Stanford University.
